Stony-iron meteorites account for less than 1% of observed meteorite falls. As expected, stony-iron meteorites are heavier than stony meteorites but not quite as heavy as iron meteorites. They usually have rusted surfaces, and are always strongly attracted toward a magnet.
As their name implies, stony-iron meteorites consist of roughly equal proportions of metal and silicates. The slice below consists of yellow-brown crystals called olivine (the gemstone name is peridot) scattered within a matrix of silvery-colored Fe-Ni metal. |
